Our first production to reopen theatres this year is the thrilling reimagining of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar directed by Artistic Director Kip Williams. It’s the perfect opportunity to look back on other times Shakespeare has been reinvented on stage at Sydney Theatre Company. Here are some of our most memorable Shakespeare moments.
Julius Caesar On stage 15 Nov – 23 Dec 2021 |
1982 MACBETH
Directed by Richard Wherrett
Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House
In 1982, we saw stage icon John Bell play Macbeth, eight years before he went on to form Bell Shakespeare. Despite many amazing performances with STC over the years, this was the only time John performed in a Shakespeare with STC. See John Bell return to the STC stage once again for Bess Wohl’s Grand Horizons in 2022. (Photo: Brett Hilder)
1989 A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM
Directed by Richard Wherrett
Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House
Couples and coupling are at the heart of A Midsummer Night's Dream, with plenty of partner-swapping drama to keep things interesting. In our 1989 production, Mark Pegler and Susan Lyons played the uber-fairies Oberon and Titania. Meanwhile, in another part of the enchanted forest, Marcus Graham and Rebecca Frith played lovers Demetrius and Hermia. (Photos: Branco Gaica)
1986 MEASURE FOR MEASURE
Directed by Nick Enright
The Wharf Theatre

1987 PERICLES
Directed by George Ogilvie

This scene in Pericles involves a complicated relationship between Antiochus played by David Downer and his daughter played by Isabelle Anderson with Pericles, played by Jim Holt, stepping right into the middle of their incestuous affair. (Photo: Hugh Hamilton)

2005 JULIUS CAESAR
Directed by Benedict Andrews
Wharf 1 Theatre
Our upcoming production of Julius Caesar will not be the first to be performed in the Wharf 1 Theatre. In 2005, Benedict Andrews directed another production of the play that was nominated for several Helpmann awards, including Best Male Actor and Best Sound Design. (Photo: Tania Kelley)
2007 TAMING OF THE SHREW
Directed by Rachel McDonald
Wharf 2 Theatre
The STC Education production of The Taming of the Shrew is the only time the play has been staged in STC history! Directed by Rachel McDonald and starring Alice Parkinson and Rohan Nichole, it let students in on one of Shakespeare’s earliest works. (Photo: Tracey Schramm)
2011 HAMLET
Directed by Naomi Edwards
Wharf 2 Theatre
Back in 2011, Sophie Ross captured the cynical and melancholy Hamlet on stage, taking on a famously male lead role alongside Julia Ohannessian as Ophelia. (Photo: Tracey Schramm)
2013 ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD
Directed by Simon Phillips
Wharf 1 Theatre
We're technically cheating with this one but without Shakespeare's Hamlet there would be no Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard – a feast of metatheatre, laughs, and Shakespeare references abound. Sharing the stage with the brilliant Tim Minchin and Toby Schmitz is Ewen Leslie as ‘The Player’, also starring in our production of Julius Caesar this month. (Photo: Heidrun Lohr)
2013 ROMEO AND JULIET
Directed by Kip Williams
Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House
Kip Williams’ production of Romeo and Juliet in 2013 starred Eryn Jean Norvill as Juliet. In our 2022 Season, see them working together again in the spellbinding The Picture of Dorian Gray. (Photo: Grant Sparkes-Carroll)
2014 MACBETH
Directed by Kip Williams
Roslyn Packer Theatre
We’re doubling up on Macbeth’s, but for good reason! Kip Williams’ lauded 2014 production turned the tables, with patrons seated on the stage and the performance happening throughout the RPT auditorium. Hugo Weaving led a stellar cast in this haunting and innovative production. (Photo: Brett Boardman)
2016 A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM
Directed by Kip Williams
Roslyn Packer Theatre
One of Shakespeare’s best-loved plays, A Midsummer Night’s Dream took to the stage with a modern twist. This 2016 production directed by Kip Williams revealed all the dark and provocative elements of romance and deception and left audiences stunned. (Photo: Brett Boardman)
